Clay Tiles

 Description:

Students were presented with a PowerPoint on mosaic tiles. The students were asked to brainstorm ideas that represented themselves, their family, or their community. Miss Hannah, then demonstrated the techniques we were going to be focusing on (additive, subtractive, wedging, and slip and score). Then, the students used their ideas and the techniques demonstrated to create their own personal tiles, as well as write a little paragraph explaining the symbols they used on their tiles.

Extension Activity:

To follow up our individual projects, I would have my students brainstorm ideas or symbols that represent our classroom culture. Then, the students would create a tile mosaic similar to the ones we talked about in the PowerPoint. Each student would have a tile to manipulate and then once all the students were done with their tiles, we would put them together to create the idea or symbol that they think represents our classroom culture.
